OPENGENE is an FP7 REGPOT grant from the European Commission.
The aim of the FP project is to open the resources of the Estonian Genome Center of the University of Tartu (EGCUT) to the European Research Area, making it more accessible in terms of upgrading the research infrastructure, promoting further integration into pan-European R&D networking and improving research capacity making it more attractive as a potential partner in scientific research.
To increase the research potential of the EGCUT by improving the technological platform for genomic research, EGCUT has established 3 major goals.
The first is to purchase an Illumina iScan system. This instrument would be the first in Estonia (and in the Baltic region) and will increase the research potential and competitiveness in ERA enormously.
The second task is to strengthen human capital in the region by recruiting experienced researchers from abroad and exchanging ideas and researchers at different levels with other European universities, institutes and laboratories. The plan also includes organizing three international workshops on genomics, biobanking and related fields.
The third task of the proposal is to increase the visibility of the EGCUT among scientists, research partners and the Estonian people.
